Pet Charities Helping Katrina Victims
The devastation in New Orleans is on everybody’s mind. The first place to give to help the human victims is, of course, the Red Cross.
There are also many charities that are serving the dogs, cats and other pets left homeless by the flooding. The organizations below are helping pet owners, pet shelters, and pet rescue teams and could use your support:
The Humane Society of the United States
“In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, The HSUS has launched a massive relief effort to rescue animals and assist their caregivers in the disaster areas. Our highly trained Disaster Animal Response Teams are in Louisiana and Mississippi coordinating a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort. We’re now in New Orleans and have rescued hundreds of animals in the hardest hit areas of Mississippi since Friday.”

American Humane Association
“Our hope is that we can help the animals here, […] getting an idea of what activities we might have to take care of, and eventually, either leave a team down here, or take our entire team when we move into Louisiana, where we have been asked to come and support the animal relief efforts there. ”

If you know of any other organizations helping animals in and around the NOLA area please post them in the comments below.
Update
The Petfinder.com Foundation is also doing a lot to help shelter animal victims of Katrina. Their site is packed with updates on the work they and other animal shelter organizations are doing (including RSS feed). It is a great resource for anyone in the area who may have lost a pet or is looking to adopt a pet victim of Katrina. You can use the site to donate using PayPal or mail in a donation.
This is a collaborative database linking information from the public and emergency response organizations and making it available to rescuers, victims, and volunteers.
I also found this picture of a young girl displaced by the Hurricane with a puppy.
