The devastation in New Orleans is on everybody’s mind. The first place to give to help the human victims is, of course, the Red Cross.
There are also many charities that are serving the dogs, cats and other pets left homeless by the flooding. The organizations below are helping pet owners, pet shelters, and pet rescue teams and could use your support:
The Humane Society of the United States
“In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, The HSUS has launched a massive relief effort to rescue animals and assist their caregivers in the disaster areas. Our highly trained Disaster Animal Response Teams are in Louisiana and Mississippi coordinating a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort. We’re now in New Orleans and have rescued hundreds of animals in the hardest hit areas of Mississippi since Friday.”

UK paper, The Sunday Times, reports that a small area of Britain is testing a new health program that gives patients $1,500 USD to spend on a pet. Patients will be able to use the funds to purchase a dog and cover food and veterinary bills. Organizations such as Canine Companions for Independence have long espoused the positive health consequences of dogs.
According to The Sunday Times:
Gill Galliano, director of neighbourhood development for Lewisham Primary Care Trust, said: “Each patient has been allocated a budget which can be spent on items which will improve their wellbeing so they do not require unplanned hospital stays. Purchasing a pet is one option.”

A Vermont warehouse worker found more than he expected in a recent FedEx shipment. Five kittens had made the trip from South Carolina in a box containing a mower that a customer was returning.
A local paper, The Addison Independent reports:
The kittens’ story actually starts two or three weeks before, when they were born after a cat in Honea must have identified the box, which already contained the trimmer-mower, as a good place to raise her domestic shorthair kittens.
A couple weeks later, the CHP customer got around to sealing the package and calling FedEx to have them pick it up. The truck showed up at about 5 p.m. on Monday, and the cats began their odyssey.
After their 43 hour adventure, the kittens arrived hungry but otherwise healthy and were soon feeding with a surrogate mother.
