The devastation in New Orleans is on everybody’s mind. The first place to give to help the human victims is, of course, the Red Cross.
There are also many charities that are serving the dogs, cats and other pets left homeless by the flooding. The organizations below are helping pet owners, pet shelters, and pet rescue teams and could use your support:
The Humane Society of the United States
“In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, The HSUS has launched a massive relief effort to rescue animals and assist their caregivers in the disaster areas. Our highly trained Disaster Animal Response Teams are in Louisiana and Mississippi coordinating a multi-state animal rescue and recovery effort. This has been one of my favorite sites, it’s a simple idea that’s creating so much benefit. All it takes is one click a day to help provide food for an animal at a shelter.
The Animal Rescue Site raises funds by selling advertising. Simply click the button at www.theanimalrescuesite.com and you will be served up a page full of advertising. Advertisers pay The Animal Rescue Site for the opportunity to put those ads in front of you.
It adds up quickly. Each click is worth .6 of a bowl of food to an animal living in a shelter or sanctuary. On an average day, The Animal Rescue Site will raise enough money to provide between 25,000 and 45,000 pounds of food to animals in need (see Daily Results). Last year the site funded over 15 million pounds of food!
There are also several sister sites worth your clicks:

Morris Animal Foundation
The Morris Animal Foundation is a non-profit foundation funding humane animal health studies that advance veterinary medicine.
For over fifty years, this foundation has funded veterinary research of dog, cat, horse, mountain gorilla and wildlife health. One of the Foundation’s programs, located in the jungles of Rwanda, provides medical care to endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat (the website provides updated reports from the field).
